To Vape or Not to Vape, That Is the Question!

It can be argued that 2014 is the year vaping moved from an underground subculture to the mainstream. This coincides the year ‘vaping’ (the act of inhaling and exhaling a vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device) was named Oxford’s ‘word of the year’ beating out even the uber popular term ‘bae’.

By 2016, 1.2% of adults or 240,000 Australians were vaping, according to the 2017 National Drug Strategy Household Survey.

However, still one of the most commonly asked question is “what is the deference between vaping and smoking a cigarette, and are there any benefits to vaping?”

Difference between Vaping and Tobacco Cigarette

The main difference vaping and smoking a cigarette is through its delivery method. Vaping involves a battery-powered device (known as an e cigarette) which heats an e-liquid (which may or may not contain nicotine) into a vapour for inhalation.

Smoking a cigarette on the other hand requires the burning of tobacco in order to produce smoke to inhale.

Benefits to Vaping

Although studies in vaping are in the infant stage there are many well known studies which have considered a growing number of benefits from vaping compared with smoking cigarettes.

  1.  Safer than smoking cigarettes

A recent report by the Royal College of Physicians argues that the hazard to one’s health from long term vaping is unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm from smoking tobacco. This is due to the fact vaping will not expose its user (not to mention everyone around them) to the tar or most of the poisonous gases produced by cigarette smoke.

      2.  An aid to quitting smoking

Vaping is considered by many as a form of tobacco harm reduction, which aims to prevent the harm from smoke without necessarily ceasing nicotine. There is growing evidence that vaping is helping smokers to quit including millions in the UK, US and EU.

      3.  Vaping is odourless

Probably the biggest non health benefit of vaping is its odourless. This means after a vape your hands, hair, house or car wont smell of stale smoke. While vaping may have an aroma from the different flavours such as strawberry, cinnamon or vanilla the smell is barely noticeable, when compared with the odour of burnt tobacco leaves.

      4.  Control of nicotine dosages

A good way to beat a nicotine addiction is to slowly reduce the amount of nicotine consumed. Vaping is one way this can be achieved, as an e cigarette gives its user complete control over the nicotine dosage in the vape. Vaping liquids are available in a variety of strengths, ranging from nicotine-free to high-strength nicotine. Using an e-cigarette allows you to gradually work your way down to lower levels, or eliminate nicotine completely

      5.  Control of usage

Taking only a few puffs of a cigarette just to butt it out can become a costly exercise. However, vaping allows its user to inhale as few or many puffs as they want without committing to a certain amount. This means less half smoked cigarettes on the ground and more money in your pocket.

      6.  Vaping is significantly cheaper

It’s official Australia is the most expensive place in the world to buy a packet of cigarettes! According to a study by finder.com.au, a typical smoker who on average smokes a packet a day will spend over $900 a month or $10,000 per year on cigarettes. Whereas a vaper who buys a simple e cigarette with a refillable tank will typically spend $100 on the e-cigarette and then about $25 on a 60ml bottle of e-liquid. A typical vaper uses around 4ml per day which is equivalent to 1,460 ml per year, approximately 50 bottles depending on how much you vape and the size of the bottle. A typical year of vaping will cost around $1,100 which is about one tenth of the price of smoking cigarettes.
